Holidays and celebrations are usually times for carrying out traditions as we mark these special occasions.  And while doing things the way we’ve always done them can help add to the feelings and memories surrounding these times, many traditions are sadly also tied with overconsumption and waste. Our world and the knowledge of the impact of our actions isn’t the same as it was decades ago, and some of these practices just no longer match up. So, although I do agree that honoring traditions is a very big piece of holidays and celebrations, I also think it may be time to consider if there are ways to tweak some of these traditions to match our current times.

I like to think that maybe there’s a way to still observe and embrace these times in a respectful and joyful way, while also reimagining some of the ways we do things.

Below you’ll find links to some of the ideas I’ve explored in small ways to rethink my approach to certain celebrations.  Traditions are such personal practices that I know not everything will resonate for everyone.  And not all of these are eco-perfect either.  But I believe that the more we can start discussions and hear about new ways of doing things, the more we can all start to create change.  My hope is that holidays and celebrations can be a time when we can mark the occasions, find joy, and make memories while still holding respect for the effects this all has on the world around us.

Please note that in my videos I’ve covered the holidays and celebrations that are most familiar to me.  I understand this is by no means representative of the world at large.  I don’t feel I can speak to the occasions that I don’t have personal experience with, and I also realize that even those I’ve touched on are based on my own personal background.  But I do hope that some of these ideas can be seeds of inspiration for what works for others in their own ways.
