We have a really sweet collection of picture books to read to the kids on their birthdays, but when I found this book a couple years ago, it quickly became my absolute favorite one.
How to Have a Birthday goes through a birthday day and the special feelings and simple traditions that come with having a birthday. I love the loose, flow-y approach to this description of how a birthday day might go. I feel like the open-ended, fluid feeling leaves room for the day to be whatever it will be.

The whimsical illustrations by Cindy Derby pair perfectly with Mary Lyn Ray’s beautiful text. The “shivery feeling that belongs only to a birthday” is portrayed so sweetly in this gorgeous book. I definitely recommend checking it out for the next birthday in your house – including your own!
